Hello Kitty Themed Korean 1st Birthday Party (Dohl/Dol) | Becky, Jin, & Nia

In Korean culture, the first birthday is highly celebrated with a dohl. There is typically a beautiful display of cakes, cookies, rice cakes, and more. I’ve photographed or attended several dohls now, and each time the parents say it’s like they’re planning a whole nother wedding, if that gives you perspective on how elaborate these parties can get.

The doljabi event consists of the newly-one-year-old “choosing their future” as objects representing careers and fortunes are placed in front of them, and the guests watch the child pick the one that speaks to them most. At the beginning of the party, guests select their guess on what the chosen item will be, and a raffle is drawn out of those who guessed correctly!

Nia’s dohl had a wonderful buffet and delicious dessert bar, and also a bingsu cart (Korean shaved ice). Cool Beans Bingsu was surprisingly run by a fellow wedding vendor I met many years ago - what a treat to bump into him at this event!! I always love what a small world the wedding industry can be :)
